Robin Thicke ~ Blurred Lines/Rant about the state of the music industry.

I originally set out to write this post on the video to Robin Thicke’s song, Blurred Lines. It’s a catchy song and I figured the video would be pretty good too. Then I went on YouTube and saw the video. That’s when I decided that I cannot, in good conscience do a serious post on the song or the video. The song itself is pretty decent, it’s not ground breaking or anything like that but it’s a catchy song. The video on the other hand completely epitomises what I imagine the stereotypical music video to be. Before I go any further let me just say this, above is the video I first saw for the song. Typical bullshit video with money, women and jewellery.

I then found out that there is another video for that song. A completely official and 100% done by the exact same people video. The only difference is that in the second “unrated” video the women are naked. Someone looked at that video and decided that, “Semi naked women are cool. But you know what’s really cool? Naked chicks!” Seriously, what kind of thought process goes into making an almost exact replica with just one minor difference? The video won’t be seen by many people because it’s not going to be shown on tv or anything like that. It’s a complete and utter waste of money.

If you want to leave then this is your chance, if you want to keep going and read my rant on the state of the music industry then hit the jump.  Continue reading

Quick update.

So…it’s been a tough few weeks for me. Some stuff to do with my job and then some college stuff and then the videos on the blog weren’t working. Anyways, after all that it seems like thing might finally be looking up. The blog hasn’t always been at the front of my mind and i’ll admit that sometimes it has been a pain to sit down and try to think of stuff to write but now I seem to be hitting my stride.

If you keep up with the blog you will have noticed that the videos on the site were tiny, it was like looking at a thumbnail instead of the video. That put the blog on hold for a while because there is no point in posting videos if you can’t see the video. But thanks to an awesome group of people on the WordPress forums, the issue has been fixed. I cannot thank these people enough and it is because of them that the blog is now back to it’s original form. Hopefully I can keep up with the music and get a few posts out a week.

There will not be as much content as bigger sites have but what I do have is an honest opinion and a love of music. Hopefully I can pass the love of music onto others, that is the main message of the blog. I am only one person, I have no design team, no advertising team and no help from anyone other than myself. It’s just me, my computer and some music and I hope that you like it.

Expect posts soon.

Don’t call it a comeback!

So for those of you who don’t know; GrindOrDie has been on a little break for the last month or so. The break came about because I was getting completely swamped with college work and actual work and some stuff I had going on in my life. But, I’ve taken some time and did a bit of searching and I figured out something. The blog might not be Complex or Pigeons&Planes or ThisSongIsSick but it’s mine and it seems like it has touched some people maybe not deeply but people are submitting music to me and the blog is still getting hits even though it’s been down for a while. So obviously I was doing something right.

I was lying in bed last night surfing the net and listening to some music and it hit me. I was wasting time and doing jack shit! The blog was originally something I had to do for college but it turned into something I did because I wanted to and because I liked it. So from now on I’m going to post one post a day….hopefully. Well I’ll try and that’s all I can ask of myself really. So, they may not be wordy, they may not my best work and they may not be to your liking but they will be back on GrindOrDie. Spread the word.

G-Eazy-Marilyn feat Dominique LeJeune

If you don’t know G-Eazy then click this and thank me later. Like I said before, G is a different kind of rapper. He can do the whole money, cash, hoes thing if he wants but he chooses to go a different route and make catchy music that he likes and that others like too. G-Eazy’s music has a 50’s inspired vibe to it and it makes it a welcome change from the oversaturated “Frat Rap” genre. Show G-Eazy some love on Facebook and Twitter.

Bit late on this one but Diplo does some solid work on an extremely catchy track. Definitely a party track.

Come On The Attack Baby-A-Mo

Well I got the link to this track bout a week ago and I have been hella busy so I didn’t post it. But I had to make time for this .

God damn A-Mo goes  hard on this. The Massachusetts kid goes in on this energetic instrumental and kills it. This is definitely one of those songs that give you a boost when you need it. Had it on repeat for the past week and it’s still not getting old. Massive shouts to K-Woody for telling me about A-Mo and massive shouts to A-Mo for sending me the track on Facebook.

I’m not gonna lie, I honestly didn’t think there was that much good music by indie artists when I made the blog. I knew the bigger indie cats like MGK, Mike Stud, Missy Modell, Hi-Rez… all those guys. But it seems that for everyone of those bigger indie artists you have three guys like A-Mo and K-Woody who don’t have a huge following but have awesome skills on the mic. Hope to see more from A-Mo soon.

You can check out A-Mo’s other stuff on Reverbnation here and like the Facebook page. Download the track here.

Jeu Green-Chain Smokin’ (Official video)

Jeu Green released the official video for “Chain Smokin'” a while back but for some reason I’ve slept on it for a bit longer than I meant to. But now I’m fixing that. Jeu Green is the guy who gave us the awesome, kushed up “Zig Zag’s & Snapbacks” And he made a sick chill video for the track Chain Smokin’.  The video is laid back and suits the flow of the song perfectly. From now on i’m keeping a closer eye on this kid. Jeu also drops a 420 Monday’s video each Monday, which I should check out. But for now enjoy the awesome visuals.

Upper West-Slow Down (Official video)

So the supremely talented Upper West dropped the visuals for their track “Slow Down” and it’s exactly what you’d expect from the guys. The song is upbeat and poppy with some nice lyrics and a catchy chorus and the video is awesome. It was filmed by the legendary, Jon Kilmer Studios. The video shows the guys taking it easy and just hanging out and going around the place. There’s not  a whole lot going on in the video but it makes a really enjoyable video. The guys have a lot of talent and their currently working on their debut mixtape, “West Side Stories”.

Hit the guys up on Twitter here and like the Facebook page.

Catalina Gonzalez-Keep On Loving Me w/video

I will admit to sleeping on this track for too long. But with College and work it’s been kind of hectic. Anyway back to the music.

Catalina Gonzalez is a singer/songwriter from Santiago, Chile. I have to give a massive shout to K-Woody for putting me on to her in the first place. Catalina is a bit different from most singer/songwriters in the fact that she raps as well. And she does it pretty damn well. Cat does a lot of covers but every so often she does something like this track and she kills it. I would love to see her put out a mixtape of some sort…do singers do mixtapes?

Back to business, in this track she jumps on a track from Onra called “Keep On Loving Me“. I have two things to say about this track. Firstly, Catalina can sing awesomely and secondly, she needs to do more rap’s. If you like the track then check Cat out on Twitter and like the Facebook page.
